Coiling Metal

One of the traditional methods of using wood is to wrap hemp rope around square timber or round bars. It has a non-slip effect and is gentle enough not to injure the horns. In a dojo, it would be a tool to create a sense of tension, and when used in rituals, it creates an atmosphere of integrity. The primitive technique of wrapping a material around something is a design and function that is used in all scenes, both in the past and in the present. We were asked to produce a staircase handrail using this design. The ‘leather wrapping’ or ‘hemp wrapping’ is also carefully finished by us. The result is a natural handrail that combines the sturdiness of metal with the durability and strength of ‘leather’ and a material that is gentle on the hands. We discovered that functionality and design can coexist in the combination of metal and different materials.

Primitive methods

Primitive = primitive and primordial can find clues in nature. For example, ivy plants stabilise themselves by wrapping around other plants. Fine, uneven stones and trees provide more hooks, making it easier for plants and animals to congregate there. This may be the reason why these designs remind us of various things when we see them. One of the most significant features of this project is that the design technique of unifying the materials and colouring has created a strong sense of quality. Furthermore, the fact that the items were not delivered, but were wrapped around the house by the residents themselves, has a ritualistic meaning for the people involved and the people who live here, and is sure to generate strong attachment and memories. This project was not just a superficial one, but a wonderful learning experience with a deep story and design.
