Winding metal

One of the traditional methods of using wood is to wrap hemp rope around a square piece of wood or a round bar. It has the effect of preventing slipping and is gentle enough to prevent injury from the corners. In a dojo, it is a tool that creates a sense of tension, and when used in Shinto rituals, it creates an atmosphere of nobility. The primitive method of wrapping a material around something is a design and function that is used in all scenes, from the ancient to the modern. We were asked to produce a staircase handrail using this design. The "leather wrapping" and "hemp wrapping" are also carefully finished by our hands. The result is a natural handrail that combines the sturdiness of metal with the durability and strength of leather, a material that is gentle on the hands. We discovered that functionality and design can coexist in the combination of metal and different materials.

Primitive Methods

Primitive = primitive and primordial can find hints in nature. For example, ivy-type plants stabilize themselves by wrapping around other plants. Stones and trees with fine irregularities become more likely to catch and attract plants and animals to them. This may be the reason why we are reminded of various things when we see such designs. One of the most significant features of this project is that the design technique of unifying materials and colors creates a strong sense of quality. In addition, the fact that the designers have chosen to wrap the furniture themselves, rather than have it delivered to them, has a ritualistic meaning for those involved and those who live here, and is certain to generate strong attachments and memories. This project was not just a superficial one, but a wonderful learning experience with a deep story and design.
